Dr. Masha Maharaj (South Africa)

Dr Maharaj did her MBBCh through Wits University, in Johannesburg. She specialized at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town where she obtained qualifications through the College of Nuclear Physicians of SA (FCNP), thereafter obtaining her Masters in Medicine (MMED) through Stellenbosch University. In May 2015, Dr Maharaj she participated and received certification in the 1st World Theranostics Academy (WTA) held in Innsbruck, Austria.

Dr Maharaj worked in Nuclear Medicine Departments in Tygerberg Hospital, Groote Schuur Hospital in Western Cape Province and Polokwane Provincial Hospital in Limpopo Province in South Africa. In 2013, Dr Maharaj transitioned to Private Health Sector in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Province in South Africa. Dr Maharaj is an active member and consultant on peer review panel of the South African Oncology Consortium (SAOC).

Dr Maharaj is an active member of the South African Society of Nuclear Medicine and the Nuclear Physicians Association of South Africa.

She is published in several international journals and contributed her work in a chapter in a Cancer textbook. Her interests are Oncology and Infection imaging as well as Theragnostics.

Dr. Ora Israel (Israel)

Graduate of the Nuclear Medicine Program at Rambam. Pioneer in development of SPECT/CT and PET/CT technology since the late 1990s. Author of three textbooks and over 200 peer-reviewed papers. Former Visiting Professor at Harvard Joint Program in Nuclear Medicine, currently Associate International Editor of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Editorial Board member of additional imaging journals. The 2006 laureate of the Elkeles Prize for Excellence in Research awarded by the Jewish National Fund, past Associate Director for Research Operations and Chief of Nuclear Medicine at Rambam. Upon her appointment in 2004 she was the first female Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, currently Emeritus Professor of Imaging at the Technion. One of 30 founding members of the Israeli Academy of Medicine. Since 2018 (first overseas) Fellow of SNMMI, USA, recipient of the 2020 GCNMC-SNMMI Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ora Israel is Director of Nuclear Medicine/PET at the Rambam Health Care Campus and Professor of Imaging at the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Dr. Israel received her MD degree at the Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Romania, is a graduate of the Nuclear Medicine Residency Program at Rambam and has been a Visiting Professor at the Harvard Joint Program in Nuclear Medicine in Boston. She is the author of 3 textbooks on hybrid imaging, over 150 peer-reviewed scientific articles and 20 book chapters. Dr. Israel serves on the Publication Committee of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and the Editorial Boards of various imaging journals.

Dr. Marco Pagani (Italia)

Medical Doctor, 1985; PhD in Brain Neurophysiology and Nuclear Medicine Methodology, 2000, at Karolinska Institute of Stockholm] is a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies of the Italian National Research Council (ISTC-CNR) and Associate Researcher at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm and at University Medical Centre in Groningen. His work focuses on the physiopathology of brain perfusion, metabolism, electrical activity and anatomy, applied to neurodegenerative, neurological and psychiatric disorders implementing multivariate analysis and seeking for brain networking in normal and pathological conditions. He has published in Peer Reviewed Journals about 130 full papers, has presented more than 130 communications at international Conferences, has given more than 100 Keynotes, Plenary Lectures at International Conferences, CME, Workshops and Courses and has been awarded three International Prizes in the field of Neuroimaging.

Prof. Sabina Dizdarevic (UK)

Professor Sabina Dizdarevic has been the Principal Lead Consultant in Imaging and Nuclear Medicine since 2014, as well as the Lead Nuclear Medicine Consultant since 2003, at the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUHT), United Kingdom. She is also the Honorary Clinical Professor at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), University of Sussex and Brighton and PET-CT Lead at the Clinical Imaging Science Centre, BSMS. Professor Dizdarevic was responsible for introducing several diagnostic imaging and therapeutic nuclear medicine services and setting up the molecular radiotherapy and PET-CT service in the Sussex, UK.

Prior to her time at BSUHT and BSMS, Professor Dizdarevic had several senior appointments, namely Honorary Clinical Reader at BSMS, Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, King’s College London, Henri Becquerel Fellow at Great Ormond Street Hospital, Institute of Child Health and International Atomic Energy Agency Fellow at Institute of Nuclear Medicine, University College London, Head of Diagnostic Nuclear Medicine and Consultant Physician at University Clinical Centre Sarajevo and Senior Lecturer at University Clinical Centre Sarajevo, B&H.

She is Scientific Chair, Co-Chair and Research Lead of the Scientific Education Committee of the British Nuclear Medicine Society. Additionally, she is the Chair of Intercollegiate Standing Committee for Nuclear Medicine for Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Radiologists. Professor Dizdarevic has recently been appointed to the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Imaging Champion for Sussex, Kent and Surrey. Furthermore, together with members of the WARMTH Thyroid Group, she was the lead for a published position statement for WARMTH.

Professor Dizdarevic is an external examiner to King’s College London MSc programme and a member of the national Nuclear Medicine (NM) Specialist Advisory Committee. Furthermore, she is the UK national delegate to the European Association of Medical Specialties/Nuclear Medicine Board (EANM/UEMS).

Professor Dizdarevic has a wide range of peer-reviewed publications on her specialist subjects in nuclear medicine, contributed seven book chapters, and frequently participates as a speaker and invited presenter at conferences all over the world. She has obtained an MSc in Nuclear Medicine from University College London and her PhD degree from the University of Sussex and Brighton. Her research interest is in novel clinical investigations using radionuclides, including radionuclide theragnostic strategies in oncology (particularly thyroid and prostate cancers) and neuroscience and molecular imaging biomarkers in nuclear medicine and multimodality functional molecular imaging of ABC transporter proteins. She is actively involved in numerous prospective research trials, locally and internationally as a chief investigator, principal investigator, lead clinical radiation expert or ARSAC certificate holder, currently conducting and supporting 150 research projects.

Prof. Dr. Dragana Sobic Saranovic (Serbia)

Prof. dr Dragana Sobic Saranovic is a nuclear medicine physician, chief of the Chair of Nuclear Medicine at Faculty of Medicine University of Belgrade, Academician at Medical Academy of the Serbian Medical Society, president of Nuclear Cardiology Committee of the Serbian Medical Society, member of Ethics Committee and National Delegate in European Association of Nuclear Medicine, member of American Society of Nuclear Cardiology and immediate past president of Serbian Society of Nuclear Medicine. She has managed and participated in several national and international, coordinate research IAEA projects. Prof. Sobic Saranovic is a Section editor in European Journal of Radiology and member of Editorial board of several peer review nuclear medicine journals. She has published numerous publications, organized several national meetings and international courses, participated as invited lecturer in national and international meetings and winner of several scientific awards.

Prof. Dr. Anca Avram (USA)

Dr. Anca M. Avram is Professor of Radiology in the Division of Nuclear Medicine, and Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism at the University of Michigan. Dr. Avram is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Endocrinology & Metabolism, and the American Board of Nuclear Medicine. Dr. Avram is an internationally recognized expert in the field of radiotheragnostics, she has authored 80 peerreviewed scientific manuscripts, 50 abstract presentations and 10 book chapters. Her clinical interests include radioactive iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer and radioimmunotherapy for lymphoma. Dr. Avram’s research interests focus on the role of diagnostic radioiodine imaging for guiding 131-I treatment for thyroid cancer (radioiodine theragnostics), and clinical dosimetry protocols for metastatic thyroid cancer.

Dr. Aviral Singh (Australia)

Dr. Aviral Singh is an established Nuclear Medicine Specialist currently serving patients within Zentralklinik Bad Berka in Bad Berka, Germany. Featuring over 15 years of experience in his field, he has a special expertise in all facets of his work.

Dr. Singh’s acclaimed career in medicine began in 2002, when he graduated with his Medical Degree from Zaporizhzhya State Medical University in Ukraine, where he then completed a Cardiology residency. In 2005, he earned his Master of Science Degree in Nuclear Medicine at the prestigious King’s College in London, United Kingdom. Alongside his work in Bad Berka, Dr. Singh is currently studying for his PhD at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, reading Innovative Cancer Diagnostics and Therapy.

Dr. Mike Sathekge (South Africa)

Head of Nuclear Medicine, University of Pretoria and Steve Biko Academic Hospital, South Africa

Dr Mike Sathekge is at the forefront of specialist training and was elected President of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, the national specialist examining body for all medical disciplines. He is Professor and Head of the Nuclear Medicine Department at University of Pretoria.

Previously, he was President of the International Society of Radiolabeled Blood Elements (ISORBE) and past Secretary General of the World Federation of Nuclear Medicine and Biology (WFNMB).

Sathekge is Chairman of the Medical Research Council of South Africa. He has performed several first-in-human studies and introduced peptide receptor radionuclide therapy and peptide radioligand therapy in Africa, as well as 225AcPSMA for prostate cancer. He is a recipient of several key awards for research and service, including being rated as an internationally acclaimed researcher by the National Research Foundation. His publication and presentation record earned him editorial roles on peer-reviewed journals. He is CoEditor in Chief of the Seminars of Nuclear Medicine and member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf).

Dr Irene Virgolini (Austria)

Dr Irene Virgolini was appointed as a University lecturer (venia docendi) for Experimental Nuclear Medicine in 1992 with her work on functional liver scintigraphy, and then in 1995 in Internal Medicine (venia docendi) with her work on oncological receptor scintigraphy at the Medical University of Vienna. In 2000, Dr Virgolini became the Director of the Institute of Nuclear Medicine at the Vienna City Hospital Lainz. In 2003, she was appointed Director of the University Clinic of Nuclear Medicine at the Medical University of Innsbruck and became the Full Professor of Nuclear Medicine. Since then, the further expansion of the Innsbruck University Clinic for Nuclear Medicine in Clinic, Research and Teaching has taken place. Dr Virgolini has also worked as a Councillor for the Medical University of Vienna since 2018.

Dr Virgolini’s focus in clinical research lies in the development and preclinical validation of new radiopharmaceuticals for nuclear medicine for diagnosis and therapy. Under the lead of Dr Virgolini, several new nuclear medicine tracer procedures have been clinically established. The Nuclear Medicine Department of the Medical University Innsbruck is involved in national and international cooperation, including the participation in expert committees as well as in scientific projects of the IAEA, in preclinical development and in the clinical application of radiopharmaceuticals for both diagnosis and therapy. Dr Virgolini’s work is also concerned with the patient-related “quality of life” within the scope of individualized high-dose therapy. Her clinical work and recent research has focused on the treatment of metastasized prostate cancer.

Dr Virgolini has published more than 200 papers, her total impact factor is around 1000, the Hirsch Index 35 (based on Web of Science). She has presented more than 300 lectures on the topics of molecular imaging and therapy worldwide.

In 2018, Dr Virgolini became President of the international society WARMTH (World Association of Radiopharmaceutical Therapy).

Prof Kairemo graduated with an M.Sc.(Eng.) degree from Helsinki University of Technology in 1980. He undertook specialist training in Clinical Chemistry, Nuclear Medicine, Health Care Administration and Clinical Pharmacology at Helsinki University Central Hospital. He was appointed as Professor in Clinical Chemistry at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, in Nuclear Medicine at Uppsala University Hospital in Sweden and as Head of the Nuclear Medicine Division at Helsinki University Central Hospital. Since 2009, he has been the Chief of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Radiotherapy at the Docrates Cancer Center, in Helsinki.

Dr Partha S Choudhury pursued his Nuclear Medicine post graduate training in India and is an internationally acclaimed leading Nuclear Medicine Physician of India with special interest in Radionuclide Therapy of various types of cancers. He has more than 25 years of experience in Nuclear Oncology and has also been trained in St. Vincents Hospital Sydney, University of New South Wales Australia. He is working in Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre Delhi India since 1998 which is a tertiary level cancer institute of repute with post graduate and super specialty teaching.

Dr Choudhury has been instrumental in the institutes sustained growth over the last 20 years which has one SPECT-CT, two PET-CT scanners and facilities for Radiopharmaceutical Therapy. He has introduced and standardized new procedures in the department both in terms of disease specific diagnostic and molecular imaging & molecular therapy. Dr. Savvas Frangos is a nuclear medicine specialist working at the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Center in Nicosia, Cyprus. He is the Head of the Nuclear Medicine Department and the Thyroid Cancer Clinic. He graduated from the Freie Univestitaet in West Berlin and he is board certificated in nuclear medicine from Thessaloniki, Greece.
